Project Benefits
This symposium is the first Skoll Centre event in Japan, it provides an opportunity for Japanese people to understand the context of social entrepreneurship in the UK, and for the experts from the UK to explore developments in Japan. In addition to the exchanges which will take place it is hoped that there will be ongoing collaboration between the two countries in this field.
Skoll Foundation is one of the world's leading organizations promoting the advancement of social entrepreneurship worldwide. It is expected that this first Skoll symposium in Japan will help to enhance international connections for those involved in social enterprise in Japan.
This symposium is additionally co-hosted by two Japanese universities, and other practioner support organizations, who are leaders in the field of social entrepreneurship. We anticipate that these universities and organizations will further promote collaboration, and that Japanese domestic social innovation clusters will be invigorated as a result of this project.
This symposium will also introduce to a wide international audience the innovative work of the Shinsei Bank in the field of social innovation in Japan.
Host Organizations
Oxford University Said Business School, Skoll Center for Social Entrepreneurship
The Skoll Foundation was created in 1999 by eBay's first president, Jeff Skoll, to promote his vision of a more peaceful and prosperous world. Today the Skoll Foundation advances systemic change to benefit communities around the world by investing in, connecting and celebrating social entrepreneurs - individuals dedicated to innovative, bottom-up solutions that transform unequal and unjust social, environmental and economic systems.
The Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship was launched in 2003 at the Said Business School, Oxford University, to promote the advancement of social entrepreneurship worldwide. In addition to delivering innovative teaching programmes, the Skoll Centre has developed a portfolio of research which employs theory but that is also valuable to practitioners in the field. The Centre acts as a network hub for social entrepreneurship, linking together key actors in the sector and contributing towards creating new and effective partnerships for sustainable social change. It engages in social innovation and aims to have a decisive influence on policy.
Keio University
Keio University is Japan's very first private institution of higher learning, which dates back to the formation of a school for Dutch studies in 1858 in Edo (now Tokyo) by founder Yukichi Fukuzawa. Since the school's inception, the students of Keio have risen to the forefront of innovation in every imaginable academic field, emerging as social and economic leaders. Faculty of Policy Management has Social Innovation Research Area to provide the courses of social innovation, social entrepreneurship, and social venture management. In 2008 the University will celebrate its sesquicentennial (150th) anniversary.
